School attendance

It is very important for your child to be in school every day. In recent years in Albany children who have attended school regularly achieve better results at the end of Foundation Phase and Key stage 2.

Last year our attendance improved and finished the year at 94%. At present (Autumn 2019) we are making excellent progress towards Cardiff's target of 95%. Please ensure that your child is in school every day. If your child is unwell please contact the school to report the absence as soon as you can.

We work closely with our school attendance officer to ensure that all unreported absences are followed up.

We have a clear attendance policy in relation to term time absences. We understand that we serve a diverse community and heritage visits and visits to family are important and rules related to this are covered in the policy. This can be found by clicking the link at the top of the page. This will take you to the policy on the key information page

Something to think about....

90% attendance - sounds quite high but means that on average the child misses 1 day off school every 2 weeks.

80% attendance is equivalent to one day off per week.

As a school we aim to reward pupils for good attendance. An attendance trophy is given every week in praise assembly to the class with the best attendance and they also receive an extra long playtime. Children who are in school every day also receive extra Tocyn tys for their houses. Pupils who have 100% attendance for the whole academic year also receive a reward at the end of the school year. Last year all pupils with 100% attendance received a family cinema voucher.

AIM FOR

Be on time for school

It is also very important that your children arrive on time for school. The children in the Foundation Phase have phonics learning sessions from 9 o'clock which gives them the early reading skills that they require to access the curriculum and the Juniors have their assembly. These are key learning times for the children. We close the gates at the back of the school at 9am so children can carry out their activities outside safely. This will mean tha all pupils arriving late will have to come to the main entrance on Albany Road.

Children are rewarded for being punctual with a weekly 'Tocyn ty' morning in which any children who arrive on time receive a tocyn ty just for being 'on time'.

School begins every day ay 8.55am. Please ensure your child arrives by this time.

Did you know?

5 minutes late every day = 3 days of school lost each year

10 minutes late = 6 days lost

15 minutes late = 10 days lost (2 whole weeks)

20 minutes late = 13 days lost

30 minutes late = 19 days lost (nearly a month)
